  • Description: Although this gene was identified as a DNA repair protein RecO (most likely due to generic testing methods), it is slightly more homologous to RecN (21.3% alignment versus 17.0% alignment for RecO). These differences in alignment are slight and make it difficult to determine which is for certain the E Coli homolog. The equivalent E. Coli page is for RecN since it represents slightly better alignment. Below are descriptions of both RecO and RecN.
    • RecO is a component of the RecFOR complex which functions in RecA-mediated replication recovery [Matsunaga96]. Citations found on [2]
    • RecN is required for repair of double strand breaks in the chromosome when these breaks occur at two or more locations, but not when there is a single break in the chromosome. DksA works with RecN in this capacity. A recN dksA double mutant becomes filamentous and is unable to divide after induction of double-strand breaks [Meddows05]. recN mutations result in increased sensitivity to Mitomycin C and ionizing radiation correlated with reduced UV inducible repair of double strand breaks in DNA [Picksley84]. Multiple copies of recN increased resistance of recN mutants to ionizing radiation and decreased survival of wild-type cells [Picksley85]. RecN is important for bleomycin lesion repair [Kosa04].
