Ribonuclease III partakes in RNA metabolism when the enzyme cleaves double stranded RNA to form mature RNA from primary RNA transcripts. This enzyme metabolizes primary rRNA transcripts to form precursors of the mature rRNA that is necessary for ribosomal function.

  • rnc encodes ribonuclease III, which participates in the double-stranded rRNA cleavage; in particular it cleaves 16S and 23S rRNA prior to incorporation in the ribosome.
  • rnc encodes ribonuclease III, which cleaves both some types of met-tRNAs and 16S and 23S rRNAs in E. coli in order to produce intermediates to mature rRNAs and metY tRNAs.
